Charlotte Latin School is a private institution founded in 1970 to provide a deep understanding of traditional academic
disciplines for students in kindergarten through senior high school.
The school is located on a planned 52 acre campus in southeastern Charlotte. The campus is comprised of five buildings
which were constructed in two phases. The 14 classroom Elementary Building and 11 classroom Junior High Building were completed
in the fall of 1971. The Library, 9 classroom Senior High / Administrative Building, and 400 spectator capacity Gymnasium were
completed in by 1973. In 1974, a classroom building, kindergarten addition, and the installation of athletic playing fields were
completed.
The architects' organization of the site specified individual buildings to separate student age groups for appropriate
social development and to prevent later phases of construction from interfering with a normal classroom environment.
The buildings are located at the interior of the site, and existing wood stands provide a foil between academic buildings,
parking areas, and athletic playing fields. The gymnasium and the two-story wings of the senior high building are positioned at
lower areas of the site to maintain a single-story residential scale which compliments the character of the site.
In addition to the building entrances from the concourse, individual classroom entrances encourage the us of the campus as a
teaching space, without creating inordinate traffic through the buildings during class time.
