Thomas I Storrs College of Architecture
University of North Carolina at Charlotte
FWA and associated architect, Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, designed this building to terminate the major east-west pedestrian axis
on campus at its main entrance. Included in the facility are design studios, critique rooms, an exhibition hall, faculty offices,
materials labs, gallery, and lecture hall. Natural light is brought into the building through skylights, clerestory windows, and glass
block bands at the top of the circular stair/elevator element and gallery.
The College of Architecture building is in a prominent location at the entrance of the UNC Charlotte campus. The building has
been honored with two AIA awards and was considered by the University’s former Chancellor, to be the design standard against which
all future projects at the University will be measured.
