Christopher Fordham Hall
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Fordham Hall was designed for faculty research in molecular biology and biotechnology. The facility encourages interaction and collaboration between the School of Medicine's Departments of Bacteriology, Physiology and Microbiology, and the Life Science's Department of Biology. The design solution provided five levels of research labs with a partial floor below grade to house mechanical and electrical equipment, storage and centralized labware washing facilities.
CONTINUED

The laboratories are grouped in two bands, one along the north facade facing the Life Sciences complex and one along the south facade facing the Medical School. These bands and two parallel corridors flank an intermediate layer of support spaces including glassware and equipment storage, controlled environment chambers, and low temperature laboratories along with building core functions such as toilets and elevators.

Both the Life Sciences complex and the Medical School have direct on-grade access on their respective sides of the building to a principal circulation corridor to reinforce the integration of the two faculties in biotechnology research.

Working closely with the University Facilities Planning and Design Office and representatives of the various departments produced a facility that addresses current research needs of the faculty and satisfies the desire for future flexibility.
