The Rocky Mountain RBL proposes is an integral part of a complex of related research buildings. The location on Colorado
State University's remote Foothill Research Campus provided an opportunity for physical security and perimeter barriers
that minimize opportunities for intrusion.
The building is adjacent to the existing Bioenvironmental Research Building (BRB) where current Biosafety Level 3 Enhanced (BSL-3)
research suites are located. The new BSL-3 spaces match the existing BRB building in construction and operation. The new building
also provides a continuous attic space above, and a full basement below the BSL-3 containment suites for service access totally
independent of the ongoing research.
When connected to the proposed expansion of the BRB, the RBL will significantly increase the number of BSL-3 containment
laboratories located in this research complex. In addition, the entire complex can easily be converted to a BSL-4 Cabinet Laboratory
in times of a national emergency.
