FWA | CSU Regional Biocontainment Lab

This new Regional Biocontainment Lab (RBL) is one of only thirteen awarded across the nation. It consists of seven BSL-3 Enhanced containment suites, BSL-2 labs, lab support spaces, and offices to accommodate the Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology research programs. These programs investigate infectious diseases and toxicology, and require isolation facilities for the protection of experiments, researchers, the environment, and the public.

The Rocky Mountain RBL proposes is an integral part of a complex of related research buildings. The location on Colorado State University's remote Foothill Research Campus provided an opportunity for physical security and perimeter barriers that minimize opportunities for intrusion.

The building is adjacent to the existing Bioenvironmental Research Building (BRB) where current Biosafety Level 3 Enhanced (BSL-3) research suites are located. The new BSL-3 spaces match the existing BRB building in construction and operation. The new building also provides a continuous attic space above, and a full basement below the BSL-3 containment suites for service access totally independent of the ongoing research.

When connected to the proposed expansion of the BRB, the RBL will significantly increase the number of BSL-3 containment laboratories located in this research complex. In addition, the entire complex can easily be converted to a BSL-4 Cabinet Laboratory in times of a national emergency.
