Central Piedmont Community College

The challenge of this design for Central Piedmont was to convert an existing two-story classroom building into a headquarters for the Music Department and to provide a connection to a new Academic Center which contains performance spaces for this and other departments of the community college. An addition to the front gave the building a new face to coordinate with the new campus aesthetic and to accommodate specialized spaces for rehearsals and small recitals.

Location of this addition to the street-side of the building improves patron access to these spaces and provided an opportunity to create a new look for the building in harmony with the new traditional aesthetic for campus buildings. Additional spaces unique to the department include individual practice rooms, group practice labs, studios for voice, piano and guitar, a music library and a small recording studio.
