The University's goal for this project was to create a building that met the needs of the faculty, as well as creating a
building that enhanced and integrated well into the existing campus context. In designing the building, The FWA Group looked
at elements on many of the older buildings that neighbor Rankin as well as newer buildings that have successfully incorporated
the new standards.
The building is located along the main student pedestrian corridor and has been sited to maintain the courtyard located between
the site and Edwin Duncan Hall. The first floor has been established above the low point of a 100-year flood plain and is partially
below grade. Main entry is at the second floor from the pedestrian walkway. Vehicular access and service to the site come under the
adjacent "Octagon" Building at the northwest corner of the courtyard. This separates vehicular and pedestrian traffic and allows
direct access to the first level of the building.
Due to concerns about security and the need for a service entrance, the Animal Facility is placed on the first level. The second
floor level contains the majority of the teaching and faculty research laboratories. The second and third floors are organized in
a similar manner. The east side of the building contains teaching and research laboratory spaces which are located adjacent to
service chases along the corridor. The west side of the building contains faculty offices and laboratory support spaces.
